Frequently asked questions
Several castles in France bear the name Montmirail, including one in the Marne department in the Grand Est region. Additionally, various localities share this name in France, such as the one in Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, within the commune of Ainay-le-Château, or the village of Crots in the Hautes-Alpes, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, where a church and a road also bear the same name. The Dentelles de Montmirail, located in the Vaucluse department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, form a mountain range that is home to several castles, including one named Montmirail.
The 1993 film Les Visiteurs, directed by Jean-Marie Poiré, does not include any scenes set in these locations. The name appears to be inspired rather by Montmirail in the Sarthe department, as evidenced by the name of the antagonist of Godefroy de Montmirail (a fictional character), Duke Gontran de Luigny, nicknamed “Le Buté” (also a fictional character). Indeed, Luigny is a unique commune in France, located just 26 km from the castle.
The medieval scenes of the movie were shot in the fortified city of Carcassonne, in the Aude department of the Occitanie region. The Château de Montbrun was also used for this purpose. As for the contemporary scenes, the Château d’Ermenonville was chosen as the setting, both for indoor and outdoor shots.
