Accessibility Description (Castle tour)

To access the Château de Montmirail, parking is available at Place de la Mairie, approximately 250 meters from the entrance gate. The castle is perched atop a rocky spur, and the pathway, stabilized with asphalt, is mostly steep, with slopes exceeding 5%. No standard-compliant access ramps are available.

It is possible to access the château’s forecourt directly by car and park in a dedicated space. To do so, please contact us upon your arrival in Montmirail. The château visit is only available via guided tour and is not on a single level.

The tour begins in the château’s underground levels and dungeons. From the forecourt, a slope of …% must be descended over approximately 50 meters. A 30-meter cobbled path then leads to the underground entrance. Access to the underground area is via a stone staircase with about fifteen steps, equipped with handrails on both sides. Once inside, the rooms are on a single level with concrete flooring. The dungeon visit is optional and requires using a spiral stone staircase with 28 steps and no handrail.

The château’s ground floor is accessible via a ramp with a slope of less than 5%. The château’s forecourt consists of compacted gravel and cobblestones. The tea room and boutique are located in the former stables and are accessible from the forecourt. Cobblestones are present in front of the boutique entrance, which has double doors. An adapted restroom is available in the stables.

The reverberation of sound in the underground rooms may be disruptive for sensitive individuals due to the resonance. A written transcript of the tour can be requested at the ticket office when purchasing your tickets.

We recommend having a chaperone to follow the guided tour. The arched rooms are dark, illuminated by floor lighting, and have low openings. However, the ground floor is lit by natural daylight. It is possible to touch the walls to get a sense of the materials used to build the castle.

We recommend having a chaperone to participate in the guided tour. The dim lighting and the size of the underground rooms and dungeons may be surprising. The underground section consists of two large rooms with no natural light and a high ceiling. To access the dungeons, you will need to pass through small, narrow spaces.

To ensure the best possible experience, we recommend booking in advance for a tour with a pre-formed group. This way, the guide can better adapt the tour and their commentary to your needs.
