Visiting with a Disability

Si vous êtes PMR, une place de parking dédiée vous attend devant le château dans l’enceinte du parc. Pour y accéder, merci d’appeler le 0243937271, nous vous guiderons.

It is possible to drive directly to the château forecourt and park in a designated parking space. Please contact us when you arrive in Montmirail +33243937271 .

Please note that visits to the château are available by guided tour only and the route is not entirely step-free.

The tour begins in the château’s cellars and former dungeons. From the forecourt, visitors must descend a 10% slope over approximately 30 metres. A 20-metre cobbled pathway then leads to the cellar entrance. Access to the cellars is via a stone staircase of twelve steps, fitted with handrails on both sides. Once inside, the rooms are level and have concrete flooring.

The visit to the dungeons is optional and requires the use of a spiral stone staircase with 28 steps and no handrail.

The ground floor of the château is accessible via an access ramp with a gradient of less than 5%. The château forecourt consists of compacted gravel and cobblestones.

The tea room and gift shop are located in the former stables and can be accessed directly from the forecourt. Cobblestones are present in front of the shop entrance, which is equipped with double doors.

An accessible restroom is available in the former stables.

The sound amplification in the underground rooms may be uncomfortable for visitors who are sensitive to echoes and reverberation.

A written version of the guided tour is available upon request at the ticket office when purchasing your admission tickets.

We recommend being accompanied by a companion when taking part in the guided tour.

The medieval halls are dimly lit, with floor-level lighting, and some doorways and openings are relatively low. In contrast, the ground floor of the château benefits from natural daylight.

Visitors are welcome to touch the walls and certain architectural features in order to experience the materials used in the construction of the château and gain a better understanding of its historic fabric.

We recommend being accompanied by a companion when taking part in the guided tour.

The atmosphere of the cellars and dungeons may be surprising for some visitors due to their size, layout and low-light conditions. The cellars consist of two large underground rooms with high ceilings and no natural daylight. Access to the dungeons involves passing through several narrow spaces.

To ensure the best possible experience, we recommend booking a private group visit in advance. This allows our guide to adapt both the pace and the content of the tour to the specific needs of your group.

FAQ

Short answer: no!

For those who would like to know more:

Several castles and towns in France share the name Montmirail, particularly in the Marne and Vaucluse regions.

Although the 1993 film The Visitors (Les Visiteurs), directed by Jean-Marie Poiré, does not feature any scenes filmed in a place called Montmirail, the name of its main character, Godefroy de Montmirail, may well have been inspired by Montmirail in Sarthe. One clue is the name of his fictional rival, Duke Gontran de Luigny, known as “Le Buté”. Luigny is a real village located just 26 km from Château de Montmirail and is unique in France.

The medieval scenes of the film were shot mainly in the fortified city of Carcassonne and at Château de Montbrun. The contemporary scenes were filmed at Château d’Ermenonville.
